In the midst of the thriving port city of Smyrna lived a small community of Jesus-followers who had come under fire from their neighbors. Refusing to worship the Roman emperor or his gods, these men and women became the targets of discrimination and assault. This wasn’t a surprise to Jesus but the encouragement He offered the church at Smyrna must have felt like a surprise. Rather than promising them a change in circumstance, Jesus offers them a change in perspective that changes everything.
